“I used to think that life was like a long highway…
what I thought was an endless road. I, however got
stuck with a faulty engine. It forced me to stop
cruising, and pull over onto the shoulder and start
walking. And it was once I started walking that I began
to see all the beauty that was only a colorful blur before”.
These words are taken from a 1990 Edina High
School graduation speech. The speech was delivered
by our good friend and classmate, Spenser Somers.
Spenser died five months after delivering that speech.
Spenser had been diagnosed with a rare form of
cancer at the age of 13. And, while he fought for
his life for the next five years, he taught us how to
live. He taught us to slow down and appreciate the
people and places that we whizz past each day.
He taught us to focus on the real stuff. In Spenser’s
honor, a group of his high school classmates founded
the Spenser Somers Foundation.
The Spenser Somers Foundation supports the Ronald McDonald House charities.
To date, the Spenser Somers Foundation has raised and given more than $75,000
to improve the lives of families of children living with serious illness.
